10.0 – BIBLIOGRAPHY

 

The bibliography provides comments on the usefulness and quality of the references. Almost all the sources contained errors or used terms and definitions that were not the best. There were far too many errors sloppy use of terms in both Chinese and western references.

10.1 – Dictionaries and compilations of early works used in translation and research

(1) Xu, Shen 許慎and Xu, Xuan徐铉. First Chinese Character Dictionary 《说文解字》. First compiled in the Han Dynasty by Xu Shen. With additions in the Song Dynasty by Xu Xuan.

(2) Li, En Jiang and Jia, Yu Min, compilers and editors. 2000. Comprehensive Translation of the First Classical Chinese Character Dictionary 《说文解字》. Chinese Farmer Publishing Co. Ltd., Henan, Xinhua Bookstores.

Good dictionary with a few errors.

(3) Comprehensive Chinese Character Dictionary《漢語字典》.1990. Three volumes. Xichuan Publishing Company, Xichuan, China.

Main source for most characters that are not in the first dictionary. There are a few errors and a few characters are missing.

(4) Song, Ti Bing宋惕冰 and Li, Na Hua 李娜华, 标点compilers and editors. 1998. Ancient Jade Dictionaries and References《古玉鉴定指南》. Beijing Publishing House, Beijing, China.

A compilation of works on ancient jade from the late Qing Dynasty up to the first half of the twentieth century. Contains the important Qing Dynasty work by 吴大澂Wu Da Cheng. The works of Wu Da Cheng contained some errors in his original work and due to editing in this publication.

(5) Comprehensive Chinese Dictionary《漢語字典》. 1999 desk edition. Hubei Peoples Publishing House Ltd. and Sichuan Word Publishing House Ltd. Hubei, China

Excellent reference with an extensive section on jade characters.

(6) The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary [Chinese – English Edition]. 2002. Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Beijing, China.

10.2 – Sources of Classic Literature and References

(1994) Compilation of Ancient Texts on Jade 《説玉》Shenyang Science and Technology Publishers.

A good compilation of all the early texts on jade and ancient jade articles without commentary or editing with good pictures. Contains the original of the important Qing Dynasty work by 吴大澂Wu Da Cheng.

(1994) Compilation of Ancient Texts on Stone 《説石》Shenyang Science and Technology Publishers.

A good compilation of all the early texts on stone and ancient stone articles without commentary or editing. Contains some good references on jade-like stones and pictures.

10.3 – Books and articles used as primary sources

(7) Aerts, Ann et al. 1995. A Chemical Investigation of Altered Jade Art objects. Orientations, Volume 26, #10, November 1995.

A good article investigating the white deposits formed on nephrite artifacts found in close proximity to human and animal remains in graves. It determined that the deposits form in an alkaline environment in a relatively short period of time after burial. This process was replicated in the lab by immersing Nephrite jade in an alkaline ammonia solution (pH 10) for three months.
